For the rest of the afternoon, you held a duster in your hand and swept dust away from bookshelves in the book room. In all honesty, it wasn't a bad place to be.

All the Stalfos were downstairs; causing mischief in one way or another. None of them thought to come up here and clean, which could explain why this place was covered in cobwebs and filth.
While you were cleaning, you were tense with anticipation, looking forward to Gannon drinking the nasty potion.
You almost couldn't wait to hear the news of him being sick- or maybe even dead. It was true that you didn't know the effects of the potion, but with the way it had sizzled and bubbled before, it wouldn't take a genius to figure out that it was dangerous.

You chuckled under your breath, a small smile playing on your face.
"If he dies, then I can escape. I'll be able to return to all my friends back home, then I'll go looking for Saria. This plan is perfect."

You finished dusting the last of the bookshelves, and breathed a sigh of relief. After two hours, you were finally done!

Eager to rest your weary body, you walked over to the plump stuffed chair in the center of the room and flopped down into it. You waited for the soft cushions to envelope your body in it's spongy softness, but it never came.

In fact, your backside had collided with something rather hard.

You yelped and leaped out of the chair, scowling at the offending object you had sat on. You raised an eyebrow.

"A book?" You wondered aloud, picking it up.

It was thick and heavy, it's pages lined with a golden gleam. The cover felt leathery and expensive, not to mention that a silver triforce was embedded into the front.
The book was a little too heavy for your aching arms to hold, considering you had just finished dusting an entire library.

You sat down again, placing the book in your lap and paging through it with awe.
This book was noticeably more valuable than any other book in here, and you assumed it was because Gannon had stolen it from the Royal family somehow.
It's pages were full of beautiful scriptures and hand-painted images, depicting the beautiful Hyrule Field and the bustling Castle Town. Facts lay on the pages one after another, and you can't seem to peel your eyes away from the captivating book.

Saria had taught you how to read, but in Kokiri village, you never had anything to read- other than occasional letter you received from other Kokiri children.

You continued flipping through the pages until something written in large font caught your eyes.
"Hero of Light and Time" You whispered, tracing the words with your fingers.
"Wasn't this what that guy was talking about earlier?"

Your eyes scanned the pages of text that told about a hero, one day destined to save the world from complete and utter chaos.

Your eyes began to sparkle as you continued reading, entranced by the tale of a hero.

'The hero was sealed away for seven years. During this time, he was taught how to control his powers and also how to defeat enemies with them.
He grew stronger and stronger, until one day, he achieved the potential to save the world. The gods decided that he was worthy enough to be given the ultimate tool for defeating evil; and thus, this young man was bestowed with the Master Sword.
The Master Sword is the only sword in Hyrule that is capable of completely demolishing evil.'

You swept your eyes over the image of the legendary Master Sword.
Skillfull sweeps of a paintbrush depicted the elegant and sleek form of the blade, light glinting off of it's silver edges. The Royal family's emblem was engraved into the blade, providing a simple but graceful detail.
The handle for the sword was equally as beautiful. Majestic curves of a deep royal purple curled around the end of the sword, allowing safe leverage. As a finishing touch, a golden crest of the triforce was embedded into the center of the sword, where the blade connected with the handle.

"Woah..." You gave a breathy sigh, awestruck by the elegance of such a powerful sword.
"...But i've never seen anyone with this sword before..." You mused, furrowing your eyebrows in thought, "Did I really have contact with the Legendary Hero of Light and Time?"

Confused, you flipped back a few pages in search for an image of the Hero and gasped.

Golden hair was windswept handsomely in the picture, bright, cerulean orbs staring off into the distance. His ears were sharp and long, an earring dangling from an earlobe. A familiar green tunic and hat adorned his body, which stood courageously, bringing up memories that you had missed greatly.

Was that Link?

Yes, you decided. It was Link; but why was he grown up? Wasn't he a Kokiri child? ...Well, at least that explained why he never seemed to fit in with the rest of you.

Intrigued, you continued reading.

'Although the Hero of Light can abolish those who bring darkness into the world, there are also those powerful enough to abolish the hero himself.'

You blinked. Abolishing the Hero? Who would want to do something like that?

'As of today, Hyrulians know that there are only two beings strong enough to overthrow the Hero. If forces combine, the world may see it's last. The team is the Dark Lord and his creation, the shadow of the legendary hero. The names of these two people are-'

"Gannondorf," You read aloud, eyes enlarging, "and Dark Link."

Your pupils dilate and dart back and forth between two paintings. You prayed that you were hallucinating, but no matter how many times you blinked and rubbed your eyes, the images stayed the same.

Gannon was painted with rough brushstrokes, his stout and muscular frame created perfectly. His face was twisted into his trademark scowl, and his evil, beady, little eyes did little to comfort your chilled body. He seemed familiar enough, since you've seen him in person before, but not as familiar as the next person.

Dark Link looked just like Link, but something about him was... off.
His silver hair framed his sleek face perfectly, his lips pulled into a spiteful grin. Even though he was smiling, his crimson eyes thinned into a glare, shinning with hatred.
A black tunic clung to his lean frame, dark leggings enveloping his legs. In his hands he held a sword almost identical to the Master Sword- except for one thing.

The handle was coated in a layer of black, and the crest of the Royal family was covered by a stain of red blood.
You shivered, suddenly conscious of the healing cuts in your throat.

Hesitantly, you directed your gaze back to the book, not really wanting to continue.

"A duo strong enough to defeat Link consists of Gannondorf and Dark Link..." You whisper, "...But those those two were already working together. What does this mean for Link?"

You pursed your lips and glanced off to the side. There was no way Link would lose to these moronic villains. "Losing" wasn't in Link's dictionary.

You were yanked out of your thoughts as the door to the book room slammed open, a Stalfos stumbling in noisily. "Ey girlie! It's time 'fer lunch. Stay here if ye' wanna starve."
You hastily closed the book, shoving it under the cushions of the chair.

"S-sure. I'm coming, just give me a second."

You stood up and picked up your duster, placing it on the chair.
You had almost forgotten about the toxic you slipped into Gannon's drink. A smile slipped onto your face as you thought about how Gannon's face would look after drinking from his goblet. He wouldn't even know what hit him.

You heard the Stalfos give a raspy cough, growling at you to hurry up. You wiped the smile off your face and rushed to the skeleton's side, eager to get to the dining room.

It seemed like a long walk, but you arrived eventually. The dining room was huge, probably bigger than all of the tree huts in Kokiri Forest combined.
Tables lined the walls and interiors of the room, but one particularly long table was set in the middle of the room, a red tablecloth draping it's surface. You saw Gannon being seated at the head of the table by a Stalfos, Dark Link lounging lazily next to him.

"The Dark lord has requested that you be seated with him." The Stalfos explained, shoving you toward the table.

You stumbled a bit, sending a glare after the skeleton. You straightened yourself out, refusing to show any kind of weakness in front of both Gannon and Dark Link.

Seating yourself across from Dark Link, you held your head high and refused to give any greetings.
Gannon didn't seem to care, and neither did Dark Link. Both of them seemed disinterested in your presence, instead, they peered around the dining hall. You could tell Gannon was looking for the person who was to bring him food. He seemed to be getting impatient.

However, Dark Link seemed to be at ease. Yes, he was also looking for something, but it wasn't for food. He seemed to be looking for something specific.

You didn't have time to wonder why he seemed to be so satisfied when Gannondorf's plate of chicken was served to him, along with his goblet of... Well, whatever it was. It looked gross...

You snickered quietly. Of course it looked gross! It was all thanks to that poison!

You and the Stalfos were also served with food, but you recognized the sludge as the goop you saw inside of the kitchen today, the one you put the glass shards into.

You felt dismayed that Gannon wouldn't be cutting his tongue off today, but you watched in anticipation as he raised the golden goblet to his fat lips.
Your breaths came shorter, and you felt your skin prick with cold sweat as Gannon took a sip.

The world around you seemed to slow down.
You could hear the Stalfos screaming, probably because they had cut themselves with the glass in the food- but you didn't care.

You felt your heart thundering in your chest, beating like a war drum; beating so loudly- almost too loudly- and you were sure the entire room could hear it as well.

Your head was swimming with both excitement and glee.

He had done it. He took a sip of the malignant potion. You had won, you would be able to escape now, right?

Before he could swallow, however, Dark Link cleared his throat loudly.

You stilled as you watched, horrified, as Gannon paused, giving Dark Link an annoyed look.

Your eyes latched with Dark Link's, and abruptly, the hot blood that was rushing past your ears so lividly before froze like ice.
He raised his hand.
In between his forefinger and his thumb, he held the empty vial- the vial that had contained the poison earlier.

Your hands flew to your pockets, searching all of them frantically for the container that you knew you placed in the back of your pants. Your eyes widened, then became glassy with realization.

On your way out of the kitchen, someone had rather forcefully ran into your back, nearly sending you flying.

You turned, irked that the person had been so careless as to run into a person right in front of them.

He hadn't run into you. He had taken your vial. He planned this all along.

The screaming around you couldn't begin to compare to how devastated you were feeling inside. Your plans to escape, your plans to save your friends- gone.

"I don't think you should drink that, my Lord." The silver-haired demon purred, shaking the bottle between his fingers. Although he was addressing Gannon, he stared right at you, his eyes full of malignity. "Look what I found inside of this Kokiri child's room."

In seconds, Gannon had spurted the drink out of his mouth and all over the table. The drink, mixed with his saliva, splattered across the table and onto your trembling hands. If you were under different circumstances, you would've been disgusted, but you didn't have time to be grossed out.

Faster than you thought the fat beast was capable of, he stood up from his chair, sending it flying a long ways back. He howled so loudly that you swore it reached even the highest floors in the castle.
The next thing you knew, a fist had collided with the side of your face, a sickening crack following soon after it.

Pain blossomed along your face as you were knocked out of your chair. The screeches of the Stalfos around you did nothing to calm your nerves. For a split second, your eyes met with Dark Link's. Yours still held shock and betrayal, while his, for once, seemed to hold emotions other than detest. His red-rimmed irises were ecstatic with maniacal glee, even though his mouth was still molded into a small smirk.

Gannon roared, "How dare you, incompetent fool! Poisoning the Lord Gannondorf is unacceptable!"
He sent another blow to your face, nearly knocking your head off. You felt fire from both sides of your face, your head pounding with the most intense migraine you've ever experienced.

"Lousy Kokiri child! I should have you beheaded! I bet you're responsible for the glass shards in the food, too!"

A large palm landed a sharp slap across your face, colliding with your ear and leaving it ringing.

The large brute stood up and kicked your side, sending you tumbling a few feet.
Once you skidded to a stop, you turned over and hissed in pain. Your face was numb, but you could feel the blood trickling down your slightly parted lips.

He seemed to have enough of beating you, and turned around, grumbling about "ungrateful, piteous beings" before storming out of the room, knocking over a couple of Stalfos in his way.

You tried to stand yourself up, but your legs didn't want to function properly. You coughed up a couple drops of blood and braced yourself on your knees instead, a hand on the floor to support your body.

Humiliation and bitter hate flooded your system and washed over your facial features, your eyes livid with rage.

'That stupid boy...

As if on cue, a pair of legging-clad feet appeared in front of you.
Mustering up the most intimidating glare you could, you sent it toward the boy who looked like Link.

The moment your gaze met his, he wiped the smirk off his face and replaced it with a menacing scowl, almost seeming to challenge you with his deadly, leering eyes.

"...You may look like Link," You spat, staring him dead in the eyes, not backing down, "but you're sure as hell not him. I was blessed to meet Link. He's the nicest person anyone would ever meet- but you-" You coughed up a bloody mess, but your gaze never left Dark Link's. "You're nothing compared to him."
You channeled all your raging hate into one glare, spitting at the dark entity.

"You're nothing but a bloody curse."

It looked like you had stuck a chord in the shadow warrior, because Dark Link's evil sneer was wiped clean off of his face. A cloudy look came over his eyes, and he stooped to your level, face close to yours.
You refused to move, donning an equally menacing look on your expression.
You were too mad to care that he could kill you here and now, never in a million years would you give him the satisfaction from seeing you cringe in fear.

"Listen here, you stupid tramp." He hissed, his teeth clenched tight. "Don't underestimate the things that I can do. I could repeat this whole episode with an uglier ending."

You almost couldn't believe this.

Did this emotionless cretin feel anything other than anger and hate?
He was the reason why you had been knocked around the room by the Lord of Darkness, and all he cared about was his injured ego?

He had saved your life yesterday, only to threaten to kill you twice the next day.
Why didn't he just leave you to rot?

You stared into his hateful eyes, searching for any traces of regret or pity- anything that could define him as human.
He only stared back, scarlet orbs unwavering and cold.

You parted your bloodstained lips, and in an emotionless voice, whispered an honest question,
"Why?"

"Simple." He growled, rising to his full height. "No one deserves happiness."

With that, he turned and walked away, leaving you with without a second glance.

Your arm shook before it collapsed under you, sending your body toward the cold floor.

The Stalfos around you didn't seem to care that you were battered and bloody. They just ran around in senseless circles, trying to dig the glass out of their throats.

"What the hell is this place...?" You whimpered, squeezing your eyes closed, welcoming the darkness behind your eyelids, "Someone just get me out of here."
